Overhead, we used tongue-and-groove clear cedar for the ceiling, which instantly brings warmth and a sense of natural elegance to the space.
This combination of Douglas fir and cedar isn’t just structurally sound; it’s visually striking, creating a cozy yet refined atmosphere that truly sets this deck apart. It’s a testament to the timeless appeal of natural, locally-sourced materials, and it’s a big reason why I take pride in every deck builder in Coquitlam project I undertake. Living Outdoors, Every Season
But let’s be real—living outdoors in the Lower Mainland means you have to be ready for anything. Those cool, damp evenings can cut a gathering short, which is exactly what we wanted to avoid. That’s where the smart additions came in. We installed an overhead gas heater, a total game-changer for extending the time the space can be used. Finally, we had to address the incredible view. The property backs onto a lush, green backyard framed by towering evergreens. To make sure the view was a constant part of the experience, we opted for a glass railing. This was one of my favourite design choices for this project. It offers all the safety of a traditional railing without blocking the stunning backdrop of nature. It makes the space feel both grounded and expansive. This results in a perfect blend of structured design and natural serenity.
