How I Help Homeowners Get the Most Out of Their Outdoor Spaces

Over the years, I’ve learned that every outdoor project starts the same way—with a conversation. Most homeowners already have a vision in their heads. Sometimes it’s clear, sometimes it’s just a feeling that their backyard could be something more. My job isn’t to push a design or sell a product. It’s to listen, understand how they want to use the space, and help shape an idea into something that truly works for their home and their life.

A lot of people think a deck is just a structure you add to the back of a house. But when you approach it the right way, it becomes much more than that. It becomes a place where family dinners stretch into long summer evenings, where friends gather on weekends, and where kids grow up making memories. That’s the part of the work that really matters to me.

Starting With the Right Questions

When I first meet with homeowners, I’m usually asking more questions than giving answers. How do you see yourself using the space? Do you host often, or is it more for quiet mornings with a coffee? Do you want privacy, open views, shade, or a mix of all three? These details shape the entire direction of the project.

Sometimes people come in with photos they’ve saved or ideas they’ve seen online. That’s a great starting point, but every home and yard is different. The layout of the property, the way the sun moves through the yard, the view lines, and even how the house connects to the outdoor space all influence the design. My role is to take those ideas and translate them into something practical, durable, and built to last in our BC climate.

It’s also about thinking beyond just the deck itself. Railings, lighting, privacy features, covered areas, and how everything flows together can completely change how the space feels. When these elements are planned together from the beginning, the finished result feels natural rather than pieced together over time.

Building Spaces That Actually Get Used

One of the most rewarding parts of this work is hearing how people use their space after it’s finished. I’ve had homeowners tell me they spend more time outside than they ever expected. A well-designed deck invites people out. It becomes the spot where kids do homework on warm afternoons or where friends gather around a fire table late into the evening.

Good outdoor spaces don’t have to be complicated or over-designed. In fact, the best ones often feel simple and comfortable. Clean lines, durable materials, and thoughtful layouts tend to stand the test of time. When everything is built properly and designed around real life, the space naturally becomes part of your daily routine.

At the end of the day, my goal isn’t just to build something that looks good when it’s finished. It’s to build something that continues to work well for years to come. Outdoor living spaces should feel like an extension of the home—comfortable, welcoming, and ready to be enjoyed whenever the moment calls for it.

If you’re considering a new deck or rethinking your outdoor space, it’s always worth starting with a conversation. Talking through ideas early helps shape a design that fits your home, your lifestyle, and how you actually want to use the space.
